Expert Tips: Guidelines for retailers on how to store & display hot water bottles

At The Hot Water Bottle Company the quality and safety of the hot water bottle products we supply is paramount and has been for nearly 50 years. We believe accidents caused by hot water bottles are preventable by educating and informing the consumer on how to correctly and safely fill, use and store their hot water bottle.

It is also important to us that retailers understand how they can maintain the integrity, quality and safety of the hot water bottles they sell, by storing and displaying the products correctly to ensure they remain in good condition and prevent potential harm to customers.

Please read our guidelines for retailers below on storing hot water bottle stock and displaying hot water bottles in store.

Guidelines on how to store stocks of hot water bottles correctly

Stocks of hot water bottles should be stored in a way that ensures they remain in good condition until they are ready to be displayed for sale.

1) Keep hot water bottle stock stored in the original packaging they are supplied in. Keep boxes sealed until you are ready to display products. Ensure boxes are not crushed with heavy weight. Pressure on hot water bottles can deform or damage hot water bottles.

2) Stock should be stored in a cool location that is relatively stable in temperature. An ideal temperature is between 15 - 25°C to maintain the integrity of the product. Do not store hot water bottles in areas of:

  • excessive heat
  • freezing temperatures
  • near direct sources of heat e.g radiators, heaters, hot water pipes
  • extreme fluctuating heat
  • direct sunlight

3) Stock should be stored in a dry location. This will prevent mold or deterioration of the product.

Guidelines on how to display hot water bottles correctly and safely in store

Displaying hot water bottles correctly and safely in store is crucial for ensuring product integrity, customer safety, and to provide a pleasant shopping experience.

1) Display hot water bottles in original packaging. Here at The Hot Water Bottle Company we have always supplied our hot water bottles in plastic packaging or gifting boxes, both now fully now recyclable, as this keeps them in good condition and protects them from dirt and other factors that may cause damage, and it is a good way to provide the customer with all the relevant product and safety instructions. Where the hot water bottle being sold does not come with packaging consider providing a protective cover for each bottle or speak with your supplier about having a packaged product in future. This is more important with uncovered hot water bottles as exposure to air can advance deterioration of rubber.

2) Avoid direct sources of heat. Do not display hot water bottles near direct sources of heat such as radiators, heaters, water pipes or windows where the product could be exposed to sunlight.

3) Maintain a cool, dry environment where the bottles are displayed. The ideal temperature should be between 15-25°C.

4)  Where possible hang hot water bottles upright. Unless hot water bottles come in rigid box style packaging where the whole hot water bottle is enclosed,  it is better to hang hot water bottles or keep them upright to avoid damage that might occur from stacking or piling hot water bottles on top of each other.

5) Do not overcrowd the display area. Display hot water bottles in a way that is not overcrowded and avoids customers having to dig through a pile or pulling out hot water bottles from an overcrowded section as this could lead to hot water bottles being accidentally damaged or left in a way that ruins the shape i.e. bent, twisted. Bins are not advised!

6) Inspect the display regularly and keep it tidy to maintain the integrity of the hot water bottle.

7) Check the displayed stock periodically to ensure no hot water bottles are damaged, cracked, or showing signs of wear. Remove any defective items promptly to prevent potential harm to customers.

By following these guidelines as a retailer you can help ensure the hot water bottles being sold stay in good condition and are ready for sale so that customers remain confident in the hot water bottle they are buying.
