Rubber smells. It's a natural product and it's a bit like marmite; you either love the smell, hate the smell or are completely not bothered!
If you hate the smell of rubber then the traditional rubber hot water bottle can be an assault to the senses when first used. Here at The Hot Water Bottle Company we understand that some consumers find the smell of the product overpowering on initial use, this is because filling a hot water bottle with heated water amplifies the smell (we'll leave out the sciencey bit for now!) and this can make some people feel queasy.
Whist the rubber smell will fade overtime with use, it is possible to speed up the process and get rid of the rubber smell more quickly:
Before using your hot water bottle remove any packaging and covers and following the British Standard instructions for filling, fill the bottle with hot water. Leave in a well ventilated area i.e. a shed, garage or outside, out of direct sunlight, and allow the water in the bottle to cool completely. Repeat this process at least 3 - 5 times and the smell will reduce significantly. When using your hot water bottle use a cover; whilst it is advised that a cover is always used for safety reasons, this will also help reduce the smell.
It is not advised that chemical detergents are used to clean or try to rid the hot water bottle of its natural smell as they may cause early degradation and damage to the product affecting its safety.
